Hello all...my name is Kate. I live in beautiful coastal North County San Diego and my goal in life is to spend my time doing what I enjoy and love. I have an obsession with natural skincare (hence the beauty recipes on here). I love to eat and cook so you'll find recipes galore. I try to keep things on the healthy side, but still yummy. And I have about a gazilion other interests, but most are centered around art, music and writing. You'll find little tidbits of those scattered around this little space as well.
I'm a fan of synthesizers, Bret Easton Ellis, sunsets, cold beer, long hair, vinyls, Vangelis and warm weather...for more random facts about me, see below.
Blogging
How long have you been blogging? I started my first blog, Sweet Fuzz in 2008.
Is blogging your only job? Actually yes, although not just for Bohemian Kate. I also blog for a health retreat down in Mexico.
How did you get started in blogging? I knew I wanted to start a web based business, but I just didn't know what I wanted to do. I had heard of people making money from blogging, so I looked into it and became addicted to the concept. To me, blogging is like show and tell for grown ups, and I always loved that when I was a kid...so here I am today.
How do you have time to blog while working? It's not easy, but I love it. It's my passion so I make time for it.
What kind of camera do you use? A Canon Rebel xsi with a 50mm 1.8 lens (as of 2013). Photography is somewhat of a new area for me, but I'm liking it more and more. I will say, it's a lot easier to create beautiful photos with a dslr rather than a point and shoot.
What kind of software do you use for your banners and photos? I used Illustrator for my banner and buttons plus PhotoShop for my photos.
What advice would you give to a new blogger? Create original content, be consistent and stay true to who you are.
Creative
What are your favorite films? Hmmm, this is difficult. There are so many different films I like, but these are the ones that I never get tired of; Dazed and Confused (probably my favorite of all time), Almost Famous, Edward Sissorhands, Black Swan and Stealing Beauty.
What kind of music do you like? Music is an obsession of mine. I love so many different kinds, sometimes it's hard to narrow it down, but I'll give it my best shot. I'm an 80s child so I definitely have an affinity for 80s music, especially the bands that you don't hear much about these days, but are what my memories of that time were; ZZ Top (I loved the Legs video when I was a little girl), Don Henley, INXS, Dire Straits, The Cars, Fleetwood Mac, etc...I also had Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and Janet Jackson on vinyl that I used to play on my Fisher Price record player.
I grew up listening to Classic Rock from the 60s and 70s because of my parents, so that is music that I will never get tired of; The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, Heart, The Doobie Brothers...there are just so many that I can't possibly list them all here.
Being a preteen in the early 90s, I will also forever love grunge. I used to listen to a ton of hip hop, but I'm not so much into that now.
Some of my current favorites are Hot Chip, Washed Out, Com Truise, M83, Anoraak, Arcade Fire, Kavinsky and of course Daft Punk.
Who or what inspires your personal style? I love checking out street style blogs for new style ideas and I get really inspired by photos from the 60s, 70s and 80s. I buy a lot from Urban and Etsy.
What do you get inspired by for your art, design, and crafts? Definitely magazines like Elle Decor and Nylon (fashion definitely inspires my art). Sometimes it's listening to music and sometimes just being in a bare room that needs some love.
How long have your been doing art and design? I've been drawing and painting since I was a kid, nowadays, I have my hands in other creative stuff as well.
How did you get into making your own skincare products? I've always been into skin care products, but in the last five years I started researching what the ingredients are in the products I use. It's not a pretty picture! It's actually quite mind boggling that many of the ingredients that we use in every day products are cancer causing...so now I make all my own skincare products. My skin has never looked better and I feel more at peace.
I really love your recipes, do you only use organic food? I try to whenever possible to use organic ingredients. To me it is worth the extra money to be healthy and eco conscious. Very rarely do I use something that is not organic and that's only if there is no organic alternative.
Personal
How old are you? 33, although I still feel (and act sometimes) like I'm 25.
Where do you live? The mellow coast of North County San Diego.
What does it mean to be "bohemian" to you? Okay, I get this questions a lot. Bohemian to me means not conforming to what society thinks you should do. I often get called weird or a hippie for making my own beauty products or only eating organic or wearing vintage clothes with shoulder pads (they look good sometimes!) Truth be told, it doesn't really bother me. I like being a little different, but I am by no means living in a commune or refusing to shave my legs. I really relate to the term in the sense that I am more on the artsy non conventional side.
You have a lot of interests, what are your favorites? This has always been a problem for me, because I do have a wide array of interests. I always had the hardest time deciding what I wanted to do when I grew up or what my major was going to be in college. In the end, I've decided I can't narrow it down to one or two things. Basically, my favorites are everything I blog about here.
Do you have a boyfriend? I just got married!
What were you like in high school? I was pretty much a nerd in high school which is funny to me now! I was on the swim team and also involved in drama. High school was definitely not my time, but I still had fun and I still have my best friends from back then.
What do you do in your spare time? I rarely have spare time, but I love going to dinner with my husband, having a drink or two with my friends and going to the beach.
Since you love vintage clothes and music, if you could live in any decade what would it be? This is actually something that I've thought a lot about. Okay, basically, I would love to have lived when my parents grew up. Born in the 50s, teen in the 60s and in my 20s in the 70s. That to me is when the world really changed and I would love to have witnessed that. Plus, the music...
What's an unusual fact about you? Something that usually surprises people is that I love football and I play in a fantasy league. I can get very competitive :)
